We will have snacks and beverages for sale. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door.

Volunteers Needed. Our St. Vincent De Paul Conference is looking for parishioners interested in contacting, visiting, and assessing material need for clients who contact the Society. The time commitment is minimal; the experience is fulfilling; training will be provided. If you’re interested, contact Sister Jeremy at 833-0298 ext 314 or jmidura@stjosephbuffalo.com.

A Book Club for Retirees: Anyone interested in getting one started? Now that you may find yourself with some extra time on your hands or the ability to set your own schedule, you may have an interest in reading some solid books and discussing their contents with other adults. If you have an interest contact Sr. Jeremy at 833-0298 ext 314 or jmidura@stjosephbuffalo.com. She’ll be keeping the list. We will need a facilitator or an agreement to rotate the facilitation of the discussion.

Family Promise of WNY (formerly: Interfaith Hospitality Network) is a cost-efficient, effective, and replicable community response to homelessness. We bring together existing community resources, especially faith congregations, to assist with our mission. When a family loses its home, they are in crisis, and FPWNY responds with our small staff and hundreds of dedicated volunteers. We do this through core services: our host and support congregations provide lodging, meals and hospitality for our families in need. Each day begins with breakfast at a host congregation, provided by volunteers. At the end of the day the guests return to the host site where volunteers provide dinner and support . The evening hours are relaxation times, as they would be for any family. The day ends with the family safe and together under one roof. Host site shelter up to 3 families in its building for one week at a time, 4 times a year.
Our parish serves as a support congregation meaning we do not house the families on site but rather help provide support staff for one day of the week. We will be partnering with Infant of Prague Parish in Cheektowaga. In order to make a commitment as a parish to the work of Family Promise, we need a parish coordinator and a pool of volunteers from St. Joseph University Parish to make a one year commitment (4 times through the year) to this service of outreach. We already have a couple who volunteered to host the overnight shift and 1 additional volunteer to help with another shift. If you are interested in volunteering or want more info, contact Sister Jeremy at 833-0298 ext 314 or jmidura@stjosephbuffalo.com. You can also go to: www.IHNGB.org. Hospitality is not a special skill, but the joyful mandate of a just and loving people.

Golden and Diamond Anniversaries of Marriage Bishop Kmiec and the Diocese of Buffalo wish to honor couples who will observe their 50th, 60th, and 70th wedding anniversaries this year. A special mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Cathedral Sun., October 17 at 3 p.m. A reception follows at the Convention Center. Couples who wish to participate are asked to contact Sr. Jeremy at 833-0298 ext 314 or jmidura@stjosephbuffalo.com.

Considering Becoming Catholic? …Or know someone to invite who Is thinking about becoming Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for those who have been previously baptized but never catechized or formally welcomed to the sacraments of initiation. It is also a process for those who want to explore the possibility of becoming Catholic or enter the Church. The RCIA is a time to examine more closely the Catholic faith and discern the meaning for your life. Sessions run Thursdays from 7-9 p.m. beginning in September. To learn more, contact Sister Jeremy at 833-0298 ext. 314 or jmidura@stjosephbuffalo.com.

20’s & 30’s Book Group. We will conclude our discussion of our first book, "The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything" by Fr. Jim Martin. at 6 p.m. this Monday, August 23 in the Parish Library. We plan to speak to the author by video conference after we have finished. Contact Patty Spear for details to join: pspear@stjosephbuffalo.com.
Deadlines & Calendar Dates. The deadline for submitting information for the weekly bulletin is Friday at 3 p.m. for the following weekend. Committee chairs are also reminded that prior to setting meeting dates, you should clear your dates and room locations with the Parish calendar to avoid conflicts. Please call 833-0298 ext. 303 to check the master calendar.
Prayer Shawls. The Prayer Shawl Ministry, located on the tabernacle side of the sacristy, offers shawls and lap robes after each weekend mass to all who want to gift someone with the power of prayer. Whether celebrating life's joys or sorrows, a prayer shawl, which is a symbol of unconditional love, is always an appropriate remembrance.
And our ministers love to teach knitting and crocheting to anyone interested. We meet Tuesdays in the community room from 1:30 to 3 pm and Thursday evenings from 7 to 8:30 at the Nikiel's home.Call Jean @ 877-2559 for more information. Come join us.... all are welcome. LIFFELONG FAITH FORMATION:

Time is ticking by and we need you to hurry and register for your sessions so we can have materials and teachers ready and waiting for you! Family Sunday, Tuesday and all Sacramental prep sessions need proper planning and preparation and we need to know you are joining us! Please check out www.stjoesfaith.com and click on the tabs at the top for all you need to know! It is going to be a great year but it would be lacking without YOU!
We are attempting to do most of our communicating this year via email. If you have not sent us a current email address, would you please take a moment to do so? You can reach me, Diane Brennan at d.brennan@stjosephbuffalo.com or Athena at aschmidt@stjosephbuffalo.com and we will get your info updated.

Adult Confirmation: Have You Been Confirmed? Why do Catholics need the Sacrament of Confirmation? Confirmation confers upon us special graces & gifts of the Holy Spirit. It can change our lives by deepening all of the graces received at baptism. Adults who have been Catholic all of their lives but who have not been Confirmed are invited to join other adults in this part of their faith journey. For info, please contact Sister Jeremy at 833-0298 ext 314 or jmidura@stjosephbuffalo.com.

DID YOU KNOW…A SERIES OF CHURCH FACTS

Colors During the Middle Ages, the church in Gaul emphasized those features of worship that affected the senses–among them the liturgical colors. These liturgical colors, already listed in the 12th century, were standardized throughout the church in the post-Tridentine period. They remain a tradition today. Purple is used during Advent & Lent, White is the color of the Easter, Christmas, the feasts of our Lord & Mary, non-martyred saints & special solemnities. Red is used for Pentecost, Palm Sunday, Good Friday & the feasts of martyrs. Green, the color of hope and life, is used in Ordinary Time. Until this generation black was the color for funerals, masses for the dead & Good Friday. Seldom used today, it has been replaced by white (symbolic of resurrection) for funerals & red (symbolic of Jesus’ obedience to death and, therefore, prototype of all martyrs) for Good Friday. Blue is becoming popular for the season of Advent.

JUST NEWS:
Am I becoming conscious of my own “Carbon Footprint” as well as others?

Catholic Social Teaching on the Environment: “In our day, there is a growing awareness that world peace is threatened not only by the arms race, regional conflicts and continued injustices among people and nations, but also by a lack of due respect for nature...by the plundering of natural resources and by progressive decline for the quality of life. The sense of precariousness and insecurity that such a situation engenders is a seedbed for collective selfishness, disregard for others and dishonesty.” World Day of Peace, Jan., 1, 1990, Pope John Paul II
Action: Write to your elected local, state and federal representatives and tell them that they must move aggressively to curb global warming by supporting and encouraging alternative energy such as wind, solar and geothermal energy production. Encourage them to support research into clean energy.

Get a Charge out of Recycling your old batteries! Bring your old batteries to the Community Room for recycling during September! Thanks for all that you’re doing to reduce our energy consumption and waste! If you have other ideas to help our parish reduce our carbon footprint, let us know! Call Sister Jeremy in the Parish Office with your suggestions.
ST. JOSEPH SCHOOL NEWS:

This year, Catholic schools across the region have been installing roof-based solar panels. St. Joseph University School is 1 of 42 Catholic schools in our Diocese to participate in the “Green” initiative. The solar panel program is underwritten by a grant from NYS Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) & a donation by Solar Liberty Energy Systems of Williamsville. The 80 solar panels installed on the school roof will generate enough electrical power to save the school an estimated $3,500 to $5,000 a year in energy costs equivalent to about 15-20% of the school’s annual electric cost! Our students will be learning more this year about alternative methods to reduce dependency on carbon-based fuel sources in Science and Math classes.
“The school is a working model for homeowners & businesses in the community,” said Adam Rizzo, president of Solar Liberty. “It’s important to demonstrate that solar energy is a viable way to power a building, while reducing its environmental impact.”
We would like to thank the Diocese of Buffalo Energy Management team, Solar Liberty Energy Systems and NYSERDA for their help in our “Green” initiative on the St. Joseph Campus.
There are still some openings for new students to register at St. Joseph School. Please call for information (835-7395), or stop in during office hours which for the Summer are 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays.
NEWMAN NEWS:
